How Do AA Meetings Work

Anyone who has a desire to stop drinking can attend an AA meeting.  You  do not  have to give  your name and  everyone who attends AA  meetings, everything that is said in AA meetings is in total confidence.

The AA Preamble

Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism.

The only requirement for A.A. membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for A.A. membership; we are self supporting through our own contributions.  A.A. is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution; does not wish to engage in any controversy; neither endorses nor opposes any causes .

Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety.

There are 3 basic types of meeting "open", "closed" and "Step

"Open" meetings are for AA members and people who have a  desire  to  stop  drinking.  Open  meetings  are  also  for  people  who are not  alcoholics but have an interest in alcoholism or the alcoholic.

"Closed" meetings are only  for AA  members and people  who have    a desire to stop drinking.

"Step" meetings are where we learn how to apply the 12 step programme of Alcoholics Anonymous in our daily lives.

At each meeting alcoholics or people with a desire to stop drinking talk  about  how  drinking  has  affected  their  lives  and  the lives of people  around  them,  what  they  did  about it  and  how their lives are today.
